This body of loyal believers constituted his Sikhs, expressing their oneness by gathering as a satsang (a congregation or “fellowship of true believers”) for kīrtan (hymn singing). The body constituted the Panth, or … the Nānak-panth…. And it was a religious Panth. (p. 11; emphasis added)

When we go back to the time of Guru Nānak that message is virtually the sole reason for the existence of the Nānak-panth; and the Nānak-panth is accordingly a religious community which bound together people who affirmed belief in Nānak’s conviction of the all powerful, all-liberating divine Name.
